3-time Missouri Sportscaster of Year Murry Embarks on Another Ultramarathon Fundraiser

07.23.2024

If 62 miles = 100 kilometers, does 62 years = 100 kilo-years? That’s how old the Voice of the Bears will be when he attempts his 7th annual Rett Gets Rocked solo ultramarathon!

Jay Murry, Play-By-Play Announcer at Washington University in St. Louis and a three-time NSMA Missouri Sportscaster of the Year, is in the midst of Rett Gets Rocked1000…first, accumulating 1,000 miles or more by the end of September, in a virtual race across the U.S., and then he will attempt to complete 1,000 laps of the Sumers Rec Center indoor track at WashU in 38 hours or less.

That will net Murry 100 miles!

The Rett Gets Rocked ultramarathon events benefit the Rett Spectrum Clinic at St. Louis Children’s Hospital (inside the WashU School of Medicine) and the International Rett Syndrome Foundation.

Rett syndrome is a rare neurological disorder (1 in every 10,000 births). When a child is between 6-18 months of age, Rett takes away a child’s ability to move and communicate. The neurological damage from Rett also causes frequent seizures, severe scoliosis, and eating and drinking difficulties; all of which can be life-threatening.

There is hope for a cure. Trofinetide, a drug marketed as Daybue, received FDA approval last year for specifically treating some of the effects of Rett syndrome. And, clinical trials in the U.S. and Canada are showing early promise to re-engineer the gene mutation that causes Rett syndrome. Those trials have been expanded to more age groups for further study.
