Johnson briefly spoke with NSMA on his career and other thoughts regarding the industry.

NSMA: What was your career path like on your way to your current position?

Dave Johnson: My goal was always to be a sports broadcaster but to get to the point where I am now I did a little bit of everything. I was a disc jockey, newscaster, and advertising sales. I did several formats including rock-n-roll, country, urban, hit parade.

NSMA: What is your favorite thing about your job?

DJ: My favorite part of my job is being in arenas and stadiums. It doesn't matter the game I just love the atmosphere and the connection with the people. As I was growing up my mother had multiple sclerosis and attending sporting events was a two-hour cocoon of joy.

NSMA: What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

DJ: Calling the 2006 World Cup for XM radio. Being the first and only broadcaster for D.C. United and being able to be part of the drama of the NBA playoffs with Washington Wizards. My Emmy for coverage of the Capitals Stanley Cup on NBC 4 I am particularly proud of and a Murrow award for writing.

NSMA: What is the best piece of advice you have for people pursuing a career in sports media?

DJ: Say yes to opportunities outside of sports because it can be beneficial once in sports.
