Meet the 2019 Award Winners: New Mexico Sportscaster Jack Nixon

Today’s award spotlight is on NSMA 2019 New Mexico Sportscaster of the Year, Jack Nixon. Nixon has worked as a broadcaster for New Mexico State University for 41 years. The University of Kansas graduate began his career in 1976 as the sports director for KOBE 1450 AM radio. The voice of the Aggies has been at the University to cover over 1,000 men’s basketball games and 13 trips to the NCAA Tournament. During his time at the University, Nixon has also covered men's football, women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball. He has also served as the news director for the Radio of Las Cruces for the past 22 years.

This will be Nixon’s fifth time winning New Mexico Sportscaster of the year, his first win being in 1979. He has also been honored by the Associated Press twice, once with the New Mexico Sports News Reporting Award and then the New Mexico News Director of the Year.

Nixon briefly spoke with NSMA on his career and other thoughts regarding the industry.

NSMA: What was your career path like on the way to your current position?

Jack Nixon: Got here when I was 26. Left after six years. Worked at three radio stations and two USFL teams over the next four years. Moved back in 1986 and have stayed since.

NSMA: What is your favorite thing about your job?

JN: The freedom I get to have with it.

NSMA: What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

JN: Nova Home Loan Bowl game 2017

NSMA: What is the best piece of advice you have for people pursuing a career in sports media?

JN: Get a good education.
