Meet the 2019 Award Winners: Wisconsin Sportswriter Tom Haudricourt
02.09.2021Today’s award spotlight is on NSMA 2019 Wisconsin Sportswriter of the Year, Tom Haudricourt. Haudricourt is a baseball writer covering the Milwaukee Brewers and MLB for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which he's been working for for the past 35 years. The University of Virginia graduate has also been able to cover a variety of World Series.
This would be Haudricourt’s fourth time winning Wisconsin Sportswriter of the Year, his first being in 2011, all in affiliation with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Haudricourt briefly spoke with NSMA on his career and other thoughts regarding the industry.
NSMA: What was your career path like on your way to your current position?
Tom Haudricourt: After graduating from the University of Virginia, I worked briefly at the Manassas Journal Messenger, then for eight years at the Richmond Times Dispatch. One of my assignments there was covering the Class AAA Richmond Braves and enjoyed covering baseball so much, I wanted to cover MLB. So, I applied for a job at the Milwaukee Sentinel covering the Brewers and was hired in 1985.
NSMA: What is your favorite thing about your job?
TH: There are many favorite things about my job but getting to cover a great sport and meet the great people involved in it, past and present, has been a privilege and honor.
NSMA: What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
TH: That is very difficult to say. Probably covering some of the great World Series in the game's history, such as the 2001 Fall Classic between the Yankees and Diamondbacks. Also being on hand in Baltimore when Cal Ripken Jr. broke Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games played.
NSMA: What is the best piece of advice you have for people pursuing a career in sports media?
TH: Write as often as you can. If you're in college, write for your college newspaper. That's how I started. It allows you to practice your future craft and also decide if you like it and are good at it.
