SPORTS REPORTER - THE VENICE GONDOLIER - VENICE, FL

SPORTS REPORTER

The Venice Gondolier along Florida’s Southwest Coast is seeking a staff writer for the twice-a-week print and daily edition of the online publication.

The Venice Gondolier has been awarded Florida’s Best Weekly nearly yearly since the 1990s - with many accolades coming through its sports department. The local teams consistently make it deep into tournaments with state championships in baseball, volleyball and football in the past few years. And the teams are all remaining strong.

Along with that, the reporter will cover MLB spring training with our coverage area including the spring training home of the Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays. The area is also home to college baseball tournaments during the winter, with Big Ten, ACC and other conference schools spending weeks in the area playing ball.

There will also be feature sports writing on any number of topics; it could be fishing tournaments, pickleball, a local, large croquet facility, expansive golf courses with LPGA standouts and regattas along the Intracoastal Waterway.

The candidate will be well-versed in sports writing and photography and willing to take on topics in Sarasota County. They need to be able to shoot a little video, use a little social media and add content to our website.

Our coverage area is among the fastest growing areas in the United States, with miles of beach and boating options; plenty of free time activities along what’s called the Cultural Coast and a place that rarely sees temperatures below freezing.

Prior reporting or editing experience is necessary. Candidates should have a college degree in journalism or related field, or should have equivalent experience in a newsroom.

We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or veteran status.

The fringe benefits include medical (split between employer and employee), dental and vision options (employee paid). There are three company-sponsored benefits, including short-term disability, long-term disability and a term life insurance policy. Employees accrue paid leave per pay period. The company offers 401(k), and has the option of making a discretionary match to the 401K retirement plan after year’s end.
