1969-J.G. Taylor Spink
J.G. Taylor Spink is a sportswriting legend. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on November 6, 1888, he would go on to have a 48 year career as the publisher of The Sporting News. Spink became publisher of the paper in 1914 after the death of his uncle, and transformed it from a paper in financial trouble, to one that was admired as “the Bible of Baseball.” Spink was so important to baseball that it is said, if Taylor Spink had not existed, organized baseball would have been forced to invent him. Spink remained publisher of The Sports News until his death in 1962. He was inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame on April 1, 1969.
