Marshall Students Win 3 Virginias AP Broadcasters Sports Awards, Swann Recognized for Lifetime Achievement

WMUL-FM, the student radio station at Marshall University, took home three sports awards at "The Virginias" Associated Press Broadcasters ceremony in Harrisonburg, VA, on Saturday. WMUL is managed by longtime NSMA member, Dr. Chuck G. Bailey, a radio-television production and management professor at the school.


Owen James, a sophomore from Huntington, WV, was named Best Radio Sports Anchor. He submitted "A Compilation of Work" from the "5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88” throughout 2025.

Saginaw, MI, sophomore Shane Darling also took home two second-place awards, one for Best Radio Sports Anchor. He submitted "A Compilation of Work" from the "5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88” throughout 2025. Darling also won second for “Marshall Volleyball Needs One More Win" broadcast during “The 5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88,” Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025.

Paul Swann

In addition, 2022 NSMA West Virginia Sportscaster of the Year Paul Swann was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award. He began his radio career as a Marshall student at WMUL-FM 37 years ago. Swann now hosts "The Drive with Paul Swann," on WRVC-AM in Huntington.
