06.18.2018

Today's award spotlight is on NSMA 2017 Kentucky Sportscaster of the Year, Tom Lane.

Lane spoke with NSMA on winning his award, what he's looking forward to about awards weekend, and his start in the sports media industry.

NSMA: How does it feel to be recognized by your peers as Kentucky Sportscaster of the Year?

Tom Lane: It feels great to be recognized, especially by my peers. There are a lot of talented people in the business throughout the Commonwealth and it’s very humbling.

NSMA: What are you most looking forward to during the 59th NSMA Awards Weekend?

TL: I’m looking forward to getting to meet others in the business from throughout the country and hear their stories.

NSMA: How did you get your start in the sports media industry?

TL: I left my job in the insurance business and learned the business through an internship at a local station.

NSMA: Who were some of your mentors in the industry?

TL: I learned a lot from Gary Fogle and Gary Montgomery during my early years in the business.

NSMA: What’s the biggest highlight of your career in sports media? Why?

TL: I’ve gotten to see and cover a lot of great teams and games over the years (Duke-UK in ’92 for instance) and interview a number of big names in the sports world. I still enjoy getting to do profiles of interesting subjects whether they be athletes or coaches of all ages.

NSMA: What advice would you give to someone starting in the sports media industry?

TL: Be adaptable, be versatile, be persistent…don’t get into it because you think it’s glamorous.
