Meet the 2019 Award Winners: District of Columbia Sportswriter Brittany Ghiroli

Brittany GhiroliToday’s award spotlight is on NSMA 2019 District of Columbia Sportswriter of the Year, Brittany Ghiroli. The Michigan State graduate has worked as a staff writer at the Athletic for the past two years, currently covering the Washington Nationals and MLB. Prior to the Athletic, she worked at MLB.com for ten years, covering the Orioles beat for nine of those years, briefly working in Tampa Bay in 2008 and New York in 2009 as well.

This will be Ghiroli’s first time winning NSMA’s District of Columbia’s Sportscaster of the year. She was also the recipient of Baltimore Magazine’s “Best Reporter” in 2014 for her work as an MLB Network contributor.

Ghiroli briefly spoke with NSMA on her career and other thoughts regarding the industry.

NSMA: What was your career path like on the way to your current position?

Brittany Ghiroli: I was the Orioles beat writer for MLB.com for 8 seasons and spent a year in New York and one in Tampa Bay. I graduated with a Journalism degree from Michigan State University.

NSMA: What is your favorite thing about your job?

BG: Getting to know someone and sharing their story.

NSMA: What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

BG: Meeting some legends like Vin Scully and Cal Ripken, Jr. Also covering World Series teams in 2008 (Rays) and 2019 (Nats.)

NSMA: What is the best piece of advice you have for people pursuing a career in sports media?

BG: Get as much experience as you can. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something!
