Meet the 2019 Award Winners: Indiana Sportswriter Gregg Doyel

12.18.2020

Today’s award spotlight is on NSMA 2019 Indiana Sportswriter of the Year, Gregg Doyel. Doyel has been a sports columnist for the Indy Star since October 2014. Prior to his work at the Indianapolis Star, the University of Florida graduate worked for CBSSports.com as a national sportswriter for basketball. He was also the Florida Marlins beat writer at the Miami Herald and an ACC basketball writer with the Charlotte Observer. He is also the author of two books called: Kentucky Wildcats: Where have you gone? and Coach K: Building the Duke Dynasty.

This will be Doyel’s third time winning Indiana Sportswriter of the year, his first being in 2015. He has also been awarded by the Associated Press Sports Editors' annual contest for column writing, winning first place in 2014 and 2017.

Doyel briefly spoke with NSMA on his career and other thoughts regarding the industry.

NSMA: What was your career path like on the way to your current position?

Gregg Doyel: Worked for Tampa Tribune, Miami Herald, Charlotte Observer, and CBSSports.com before coming here.

NSMA: What is your favorite thing about your job?

GD: It's hard to write or even think about something that hasn't been written or thought about before. Occasionally I get there, and it's a great feeling.

NSMA: What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

GD: Getting hired by the Indy Star and being given the chance to write this state's stories.

NSMA: What is the best piece of advice you have for people pursuing a career in sports media?

GD: Work as hard as you possibly can, and never ever take a story off. That story might be the one a potential future boss sees and remembers ... or sees and forgets.
