Meet the 2019 Award Winners: New York Sportswriter Mike Vaccaro

Today’s award spotlight is on NSMA 2019 New York Sportswriter of the Year, Mike Vaccaro. Vaccaro has been a sports columnist for the New York Post since 2002. The Saint Bonaventure University graduate was also previously the sports editor of the Northwest Arkansas Times in 1991. He’s also previously worked at Middletown Times Herald-Record and Newark Star-Ledger.

This is Vaccaro’s third time winning New York Sportswriter of the Year, his first being in 2012, all in affiliation with the New York Post.

Vaccaro briefly spoke with NSMA on his career and other thoughts regarding the industry.

NSMA: What was your career path like on your way to your current position?

Mike Vaccaro: Olean Times Herald for 2 years, Northwest Arkansas Times for 2 years, Middletown (NY) Times Herald-Record for 3.5 years, Kansas City Star for 1 year, Newark Star-Ledger for 4 years.

NSMA: What is your favorite thing about your job?

MV: The creativity every day, every day is different than the day before, traveling.

NSMA: What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

MV: Becoming the voice of the newspaper I grew up reading.

NSMA: What is the best piece of advice you have for people pursuing a career in sports media?

MV: Be resilient. Never accept “no” as as an answer
