Meet the 2019 Award Winners: Rhode Island Sportswriter Kevin McNamara

This will be McNamara’s second time receiving Rhode Island Sportswriter of the Year, both for his work at the Providence Journal.
McNamara briefly spoke with NSMA on his career and other thoughts regarding the industry.
NSMA: What was your career path like on the way to your current position?
Kevin McNamara: Worked at the Providence Journal for 31 years. Now sole proprietor - and happy!
NSMA: What is your favorite thing about your job?
KM: Currently my own boss for the first time in my career. I get to pick and choose what I write about.
NSMA: What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
KM: Covering the big events: Final Fours-World Series-Super Bowls-NBA Finals- Ryder Cup.
NSMA: What is the best piece of advice you have for people pursuing a career in sports media?
KM: Learn how to write and write a lot. It's now so easy in the create-a-blog world. Then try to get paid for it.
