Meet the 2020 Award Winners: GA Sportswriter Jeff Schultz

03.03.2021

2020 NSMA Georgia Sportswriter of the Year Jeff Schultz writes for The Athletic, Atlanta, after a long career as a sportswriter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He recently talked to to NSMA intern, Shail Dhawan.

Sahil Dhawan: What was your career path like?

Jeff Schultz: Funny story actually. When I was Bar Mitzvahed, which happens when you're 13 years old, normally you get up on stage and you give this canned Bar Mitzvah speech blah-blah-blah, and I got up next to my rabbi and said, "I wanna be a sportswriter one day." I did know from a very young age that I wanted to be a sportswriter. I grew up a fan, but I used to turn around and look at the press box all the time. I grew up reading different writers, idolizing writers as much as athletes, really. I grew up in LA, worked in LA, then San Francisco, and in 1989, I got an offer out of the blue from the paper in Atlanta. And my wife and I decided, let's move to Atlanta for a little while. We thought we'd move back to California in five years. And here we are in Atlanta 31 years later.
