Staff | idahopress.comThis award spotlight is on NSMA 2020 Idaho Sportswriter of the Year, John Wustrow, a first-time NSMA winner. John is a sportswriter at the Idaho Press.

John Wustrow was interviewed by NSMA intern Sahil Dhawan on his career and the industry as a whole.

NSMA: What was your career path like on your way to your current position?

John: I think I always knew I wanted to get into newspaper. As a Michigan football fan, I couldn't wait till Sunday morning so I could read all the coverage the next day. While attending Indiana University, I joined the student paper. After college I got a position in New Hampshire at a local paper and eventually landed in Idaho.

NSMA: What is your favorite part of the job?

John: Gameday. Being around sports and seeing the games unfold. Also, being able to tell stories. Giving the athletes a voice.

NSMA: What has been the highlight of your career thus far?

John: Covering the NCAA Basketball tournament in Boise a few years back. Being able to work alongside journalists I've looked up to for a while. It was a cool moment.

NSMA: What's some advice you can give those new to the industry?

John: Just do it as much as you can. Take as many assignments and you can get. You will only get better.
