Meet the 2020 Award Winners: Kansas Sportswriter Rick Peterson Jr.
01.25.2021This award spotlight is on NSMA 2020 Kansas Co-sportswriter of the Year, Rick Peterson Jr., a first-time NSMA winner. Rick shares the award with his father, Rick Peterson Sr., who is winning the award for the fifth time. Rick Peterson Jr. is the sports editor for the Hays Daily News.
Rick Peterson Jr. was interviewed by NSMA intern Sahil Dhawan on his career and the industry as a whole.
NSMA: What was it like having a father in the industry?
Rick: It was just a huge benefit for me. I would always tag along with him to games and he instilled the love of local sports within me. He showed me the ropes, taught me how to properly write and build relationships in the community. I had a chance to work hand in hand with him and that was an opportunity that not many people get to experience.
NSMA: What was your career path like?
Rick: I always knew that I loved sports, especially high school sports. I didn't know I wanted to get into sports writing until high school. My dad gave me some opportunities to write and then I got some more opportunities. I eventually was able to go full time.
NSMA: What is your favorite part of the job?
Rick: I love local sports. Building the relationships locally. It's always been most fun for me.
NSMA: What would you consider your greatest accomplishment thus far?
Rick: Working with my father and how long I've been able to do this. This industry is not made for everyone but I am happy I've been able to do this for so long.
