This award spotlight is on NSMA 2020 Maine Sportswriter of the Year, Mike Lowe, a fourth time NSMA winner! Mike covers sports for the Maine Press Herald. He's covered some of the biggest sporting events in the world including the Super Bowl and the World Series. He's also interviewed some of the greatest athletes of all time including Michael Phelps, Tom Brady and Muhammed Ali.

Mike was interviewed by NSMA intern Sahil Dhawan on his career and the industry as a whole.

NSMA: What was your career path like on your way to your current position?

Mike: I played football growing up but I eventually realized I didn't have what it takes to be an professional athlete. Thankfully, I had an English teacher who instilled the confidence in me that I can be a great writer. I began writing about sports in New Bedford, Massachusetts. I eventually found myself in Maine and I loved it here.

NSMA: What was your favorite event to cover?

Mike: The 2008 Beijing Olympics. That experience was life changing. Being immersed in an entirely different culture. Maine had about 7 athletes there and when they weren't playing, I just strolled Beijing. I even got lost! But I eventually found my way back.

NSMA: What's your favorite part of the job?

Mike: The people I cover or write stories about. I get to share to share their stories. I get to speak to those close to them and hear the admiration they have for those particular people.

NSMA: Who was your favorite athlete to interview?

Mike: You know, Tom Brady was great but I always had so much admiration for Matthew Slater who also played for the patriots. He was always so strong in his faith and such a great outlook on things.
