NSMA Hall of Famer Pope Dies
02.07.2017Edwin Pope, a legendary Miami Herald sports columnist and 1994 NSMA Hall of Fame inductee, died Thursday in Florida. He was 88 and had suffered for several years with Alzheimer's disease.
Pope covered sports for more than 70 years, starting from the time he was a pre-teen in his home town of Athens, GA. But it was as the lead columnist at the Miami Herald that he made his name. He was honored nine times by his peers with the NSMA's Florida Sportswriter of the Year Award, and became a key figure in the NSMA's operations through much of his career.
