Help Fund Young Reporter's World Cup Coverage

05.15.2026

Some of you may remember reading about NSMA Lifetime Member Spencer Tomsett. Tomsett has been an NSMA member since his student days at Middle Tennessee State University, where he was President of the MTSU student chapter. After he earned undergraduate and Master's degrees there, he went on to the University of Alabama, where he earned his doctorate in May of 2025. He also founded the NSMA student chapter at Bama, and served as its first President.

Through an NSMA recommendation, Tomsett participated in the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Young Reporters Program last September and October, covering the men's under-20 World Cup in Chile. You may have seen some of his dispatches from there on this website.

Now, with the help of AIPS and NSMA, Tomsett has been credentialed for this summer's FIFA World Cup and is raising money through the NSMA website to cover his expenses (he is covering the WC as an unpaid volunteer).

NSMA's dual mission includes assisting young people in navigating their paths, and we think this is an excellent way of doing so. We're providing the infrastructure, and we hope you will provide the backing.

For more on his plans, here's Tomsett:

Greetings!

My name is Spencer Tomsett, and I am thrilled to announce that the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) has selected me to cover the 2026 FIFA World Cup!

I plan to be on-site for many of the tournament’s matches, writing articles for the AIPS website and producing a podcast that will recap the tournament’s action while also going beyond the game with interviews and expert analysis.

Due to budget constraints, my credential is the only guaranteed element of this journey with all travel-related expenses on my shoulders. As I begin preparing the podcast and planning out my travel, the NSMA has agreed to let me raise funds through their website to help offset my costs associated with the tournament.

Once the 2026 FIFA World Cup has concluded, I will submit my receipts for reimbursement to the NSMA, with all remaining funds donated to the NSMA. Since the NSMA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all contributions may be tax deductible while also supporting the tremendous work that the NSMA does to help students and young professionals, and to honor sports media.

I hope I can count on your support as I pursue this amazing opportunity to cover the beautiful game on the world’s biggest stage, while also supporting an association that has given me so much in my journey in sports media. Anything you can give will go a long way, and you will receive amazing benefits for supporting the podcast.

If you have any questions, please feel free to send them my way. Thank you so much for believing in me and supporting my journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup!
