This award spotlight is on NSMA 2020 Colorado Sportswriter of the Year, Nick Groke, a first-time NSMA winner! Nick is a staff writer for The Athletics covering the Colorado Rockies.

Nick was interviewed by NSMA intern Sahil Dhawan on his career and the industry as a whole.

NSMA: What was your career path like on your way to your current position?

Nick: To be honest I kind of half fell into it. I wanted to be a writer / reporter, in high school, I got an internship taking high school sports scores over the phone. I had a blast doing that. I hung around at that same paper I had the internship, did a bunch of different jobs, writing about music and food etc.

NSMA: What is your favorite part of the job?

Nick: There are a lot of awesome stuff. When it comes down to it, I just really love working with other reporters, journalists and editors. They are some of my best friends.

NSMA: What's some advice you can give those new to the industry?

Nick: Especially if you're wanting to be a writer, you should just read. Read everything. If you're interested in sports writing, read other stuff. Be as well rounded as possible. Read different voices as much as possible. Analyze the articles, see how writers choose to break down their story.

NSMA: What has been the highlight of your career thus far?

Nick: I don't know about that. I would say, knowing the people I've come in contact with like other reporters. Having those people around for the rest of my life. Being surrounded by like minded people.
