Eight-time Maine Sportswriter of the Year Pete Warner announced on his Facebook page Monday that he will retire at the end of this week. Warner also won the NSMA’s 2016 Sports Medicine Reporting Award.

He wrote, “It doesn't seem possible, but the time has finally come. After 41-plus years as a sportswriter, outdoors writer and editor at the Bangor Daily News, I'll be retiring at the end of this week. I have been blessed to have been surrounded by some incredibly dedicated colleagues, many of whom are great friends, during a fun, rewarding and sometimes challenging career. I must say a heartfelt thanks to all members of the BDN team during all those years. However, it wouldn't have been possible without the amazing athletes, coaches, athletic administrators, sports media relations gurus, anglers, hunters, Game Wardens, biologists, guides and staff members who have been so gracious with their time, expertise and candor. Without you, there would never be a story. I cherish the memories of so many wonderful events and accomplishments that I have had the pleasure of chronicling because of the wonderful people who were involved. I hope to see some of you around and have a chance to talk about the good ol' days -- without the hustle and bustle of deadline pressure to cut the conversations short. Thanks to all of you, and especially my patient and devoted wife Annia and our sons, William and Paul, who put up with my crazy work schedule and my obsession with sports and the outdoors! It has been my pleasure to have enjoyed such a fulfilling career. God bless!”
